The Purple Halo Gala is hosted by AWAY, formerly the Women’s Resource Center. We have been serving our communities in southern West Virginia since the 1980’s. We serve victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking in Summers, Nicholas, Fayette, and Raleigh Counties.
The evening will kick off at Tamarack with a cocktail hour followed by dinner. Former professional boxer and Wyoming County native, Christy Martin, will share her story as seen on Netflix. Make sure to bring your dancing shoes because we will be enjoying friends, food, and fun for a great cause!
All of the proceeds of this event will allow AWAY to continue the powerful work done by exceptional advocates. Our advocates serve clients through the hardest moments of leaving a dangerous situation, the pain of assaults, and the uncertainty of the future. We strive to empower and encourage renewed independence and growth. Events like this allow us to do more for our clients that grants are not always able to cover. It allows us to provided services and items needed. It saves lives.
We are proud to host Christy Martin, survivor and thriver after years of violence. Originally from Mullens, WV, this hometown girl rose to fame after a joke entrance into a Toughman competition. Her career speaks for itself with 49 wins, 31 by KO. Don King signed her as his first female under-card ever. But more was happening behind the scenes at home that Christy couldn’t speak openly about. Her story is now a Netflix documentary.
